I can't wait. Hope the BAR gets here soon. I just have
a great deal of trouble accepting that "yod ha-gadol" and the "n-shaped
het." I still vacillate between ln)h (house, habitation) and ln)d..(h?)
(bottle) or some kind of verbal construct missing in the lacuna. If
the ostracon was a draft by someone "less scribal" to be rewritten
by someone more competent, there could be all types of errors that
would have been corrected on the final document including the
"slip of the reed" that makes the inverted V. If that's a yod and you
extend the right stroke to the proportions of a normal yod, it's
the biggest durn yod I have ever seen.
The Cross and Eshel article says the partial "dalet" in
the lacuna is the key letter, yet it looks to me as if it could
also be a het. I would think that the "yod" would be the key
to the yhd reading.
Having seen the new article (I'll try to pick it up today)
can you give me a hint on Yardeni's reading?
