ISRAEL: National Competition of Graduate Multidisciplinary Research
Multidisciplinary research combines knowledge from several domains. Such a
combination was a key for many scientific breakthroughs in the past and there
is an increasing acknowledgment in the value of multidisciplinary research.
However, due to the fact that research units in the universities are divided
according to traditional knowledge domains, young multidisciplinary
researchers face many problems in the early stages of their academic career.
In order to promote the establishment of a national agenda of
multidisciplinary studies and research the Hebrew University of Jerusalem
will host a multidisciplinary symposium and a 3-stage national competition
for young multidisciplinary researchers.
The participants will compete in two categories:
(1) Ph.D. students up to 6 month after the approval of their research
proposal.
(2) Ph.D. students and young researchers up to 2 years after the approval of
their Ph.D. thesis.
STAGE 1: MAIL SUBMISSIONS
Each participant should send by e-mail (preferred) or by regular mail:
* A 200 words Short Abstract
* A 3 page Long Abstract
In addition the participants are encouraged to send the following:
* A list of related publications (or pre-prints).
* A letter from the advisor.
* Letters from referees. None of these materials is
mandatory.

interviews). Submissions should arrive to the committee till 20.3.98 (for our
addresses please see the end of this message). NOTE: late submitions WILL be
processed if it will be possilble. Materials should be written in English
(prefered) or Hebrew.
A multidisciplinary committee of scientists will evaluate the various
research projects submitted according to the following criteria: * scientific
value; * multidisciplinarity; * originality; * initiative

Jerusalem in 6 and 7 May 1998 with the participation of senior executives
(Rectors, Presidents etc.) from the Israeli Universities and Granting
Agencies as well as distinguished Israeli and foreign multi-disciplinary
scientists.
In the same meeting the status and outlook of the multi-disciplinary research
in Israel will be discussed by the participating senior executives and by the
students based on the data accumulated at Stages 1 and 2.
The committee will choose up to 30 students from the participants to the
first stage - at least 10 students from each category (Advanced Reports or
Research Proposals). They be asked to present posters in the morning of the
first day of the meeting.
STAGE 3: ORAL PRESENTATIONS
Selected students will be asked to give oral presentations of 30-40 minutes
for Advanced Reports and 10-15 minutes for Research Proposals. The selection
process will be as follows: * In the late morning of the first day 3 will be

During the first day the judges and the general public will vote to select 5
students to give talks in the second day.
