In the swirling mass of philosophical and theological currents that comprise
1st c. Judaism we cannot discount gnostic influence as a contributing
stream. Even at Qumran. But, separating the streams when they have
intermingled is extraordinarily difficult. What may have originally been a
gnostic idea very well could have become a Jewish idea through adoption.
So, when we discuss the provenance of scrolls we have to keep in mid the
pluralism of even an apparently isolated sect.
