Dan<i>el was the main character of the Ugaritic Epic of Aqhat. See the
opening lines of Aqht A (translated by HL Ginsberg) in ANET, pp. 149ff. In
Aqht, Danel gives offerings to the gods, whether as a priest or presenting
them to priests is unclear. [In a previous academic incarnation, I studied
Ancient Near East Lit..] Anyway, Danel appears to be best known as being
about the ideal son, at least in Ugaritic Wisdom legend.
The biblical Daniel seems to be derived from the ANE Danel.
