REWORKING THE BIBLE AT QUMRAN IN THE CONTEXT OF SECOND TEMPLE JUDAISM

The symposium, sponsored in conjunction with the Qumran Research Group of the Hebrew University's Institute for
Advanced Studies, 2001-2002, focused on the ways in which Scripture was viewed, reworked, and interpreted at
Qumran, within the broader context of Jewish literature of the Second Temple period. These papers address the
nature of biblical authority, the emergence of a biblical canon, legal interpretation, literary and exegetical
techniques, the proliferation of interpretive genres, and continuity with rabbinic and early Christian exegesis. A
reassessment of such issues for works of the Qumran community and related literature is particularly timely in
light of the recent publication of a significant number of previously unavailable Scrolls that rework Scripture in
diverse ways.
