orion-list Re: Qumran cemetery
In addition to the dating of the skeletons of women and children in the
Qumran cemetery, other interesting pieces of information were brought up
in Joseph Zias' presentation. If I remember correctly, one difference
between the females and males was the health of their teeth. While the
teeth of the women were worn down, a sign of living in a desert
environment where sand gets into the food, the men's teeth were in good
condition. This indicates, at least, that the men had not lived in the
desert all their lifes.
Furthermore, Joseph Zias mentioned a possible Essene cemetery in
Jerusalem with a mix of men and women, but without any children. It
would be interesting to hear more about this, if anyone has any
information.
