Re: orion-list Pliny Qumran analysis (M. Agrippa)

Russell Gmirkin,
Your fixation on Maccabees and Nicolaus vis-a-vis Qumran Essenes is
remarkable but not necessarily helpful for historians. As you acknowledge,
Pliny did not list Nicolas of Damascus as a source for his Natural History
book five. He did list Marcus Agrippa, in first place, and Agrippa wrote
works used by Pliny, scholars agree, even when not cited. Rather than
quibble on what the map commentary included--as you have apparently not
read widely on this issue--please recall that Agrippa wrote beyond this
commentary. That Marcus Agrippa, the second most powerful Roman, and
governor of Syria, and friend of Herod the Great, and visitor to Judaea,
would need to rely on a book by Nicolaus--which, by the way, was most
likely written years after Agrippa was dead--is a peculiar argument indeed.

best wishes,
