"Uncovering Ei Gedi: An Archaeological Expedition"
Dec. 27, 1998-Jan. 29, 1999
Ein Gedi's fourth season of excavations will commence in December 1998.
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the University of Hartford, USA,
invite you to take part in this fascinating and unique experience. All you
need is energy and a sense of adventure!
This breathtaking desert oasis, lying on the shores of the Dead Sea,
between Jerusalem and Masada, is the site of a Jewish village from the
Roman-Byzantine period that subsisted primarily from the production of the
expensive, aromatic balsam oil. One of the aims of our excavations is to
uncover the village's houses, alleys, and shops and to unravel the secret
of its oil production. We shall also explore further evidence for the
existence of Essene habitation on a cliff above this village.
No experience is necessary! The five-day work week (Monday-Friday)
includes lectures about the site and excavation, as well as a weekly field
trip of the area.
Vacancies for 100 volunteers staying for a minimum of one week.
Accommodations: room and full board
Cost: $180-300 per week (depending on accommodations)
