Shalom, Menachem! That was an interesting response, and I must confess that
I was thinking along those lines, so I'm very pleased you could see the
sense of it from a rabbinic-historical perspective. I think this hypothesis
makes sense of both the profane uses of the P-H script and of the fact that
the Samaritans never got around to abandoning it. It will be interesting to
see how others respond.
