Actually, parchment was smoothed in the last phase of its production by
rubbing with pumice. This effectively sanded the surface smooth by
abrasion. At the same time, salicylates from the pumice were ground into
the pores of the surface of the skin, hence closing them and preventing the
ink from running or blotting. Ginnell recorded traces of pumice, if I
remember rightly. I wonder what the source of supply was, in first-century
Palestine?
