Considering the state of the cave 4 materials, Virgil, he may well have
done so. At all events, Allegro published a photograph of a fragment that
to him looked as if it had been slashed with a sword. I think a cooler look
at it suggests that the parchment had been cut up to make a circular patch
on a garment, or the like. This is unlikely to have been performed by the
chaps who went to such trouble to hide the scrolls in the cave, so it will
probably have been a case of later visitors.
