orion Ein-Gedi destruction
I wonder whether there is a possible direct connection between the destruction
of Ein-Gedi in 40 B.C.E. and the expansion of Qumran at about the same time?
Those driven from Ein-Gedi would have to relocate. SG postulated a similar
relocation might have happened after 68 C.E. - although he thought it more
like to have been a relocation east of the Jordon.
If there were Essenes in or near Ein-Gedi in about 40 B.C.E., perhaps some of
them moved north to begin a substantial expansion of what was then an
otherwise small and obscure site? Perhaps some of their brothern remained in
their cells with Ein Gedi below.
