orion scroll fakes
Colleagues,
I don't know how many of you have heard of a magazine called "The Biblical
Illustrator". It is a Southern Baptist Convention Press magazine that
purports to offer serious archaelogical and historical background for
Biblical texts.
In the current issue, on the inside cover page, there is a photo of what is
described as the Habakkuk commentary from the Dead Sea Scrolls. Let me
assure you that the photo is anything but a copy of Hab Pesher. In fact, it
is a poorly made fake using scribbles and letters from the Greek alphabet!!!
My purpose in sending this along is to say that there is still, even in
these post scrolls-release days, plenty of ignorant folk who think anything
written on an old looking piece of leather is a dead sea scroll.
Beware! Ignorance is still alive and well among the semi-literate dilletantes!
Jim
p.s.- if you can get a copy of the rag you will have a nice laugh!
