I´d like to second Robert Kraft´s cautions as to the relevance of mediaeval
and late-antique parallels with respect to scribal practice. All of them
are from periods after the notion of canonicity and of the faithful
reproduction of text for legal and other purposes were well established,
whereas the variability in practices attested in the DSS --including texts
of both greater and shorter length-- shows that these notions were hardly
dominant there.
Nor can one exclude orthography from the range of scribal activity, as it
was precisely varying scribal orthographies that ultimately produced a
demand for standardisation and some degree of Rechtschreibung.
