On the subject of literacy one should mention the comprehensive (but
revisionist) study by William V. Harris, Ancient Literacy (perhaps better
titled Ancient Illiteracy). Harris's estimates are very low, and he argues
persuasively against those who propose extensive knowledge of reading and
writing. On the other side of the coin, specifically on material closer to
our area of interest, is Aaron Demsky's essay in one of the Compendia
Volumes, Miqra. Compare Demsky, however, to Meir Bar Ilan's contribution
to the same volume.
