Subject: Responding to Judith Wegner

With all due respect, I believe Judith is rather old-fashioned and
narrow-minded, a prisoner of the materialist philosophies of the 18th and
19th centuries. That is OK, but it is rather elitist to dismiss my views
since they are not a product of those old Germanic stolid philosophies.
Judith's views are not new, they were promoted before Geiger and Holdheim
and Hegel, Marx and Spinoza. They were offered by the Hellenists of old and
the Karaites. Their arguments lost. The rabbinic view survives, the others
wither. Maimonides and others have dealt exhaustively with historical
issues of the Oral Law.
I am still interested in analyzing the content of the scrolls in relation
to what the rabbinic "hashkafa" says, since the authors of the scrolls,
from whatever group, had more in common with us, ironically, than with the
philosophical rationalists!!
