orion varia from the moderator

A few odds and ends:

1. Sometimes you will receive a "mssg not delivered" notice when posting
to Orion (or any other e-mail list). What this usually means is that another
subscriber's account has started bouncing and by some quirk of the
configuration, it was returned to you instead of to the list-owner. If
you check the address carefully and see no sign of
orion@panda.mscc.huji.ac.il or majordomo@panda.mscc.huji.ac.il, then that
is what has taken place. There is no need to re-send your mssg but if
you're still not sure, you can send it privately to me at
msorion@pluto.mscc.huji.ac.il and I'll post it if it doesn't appear on Orion.

2. If you are going away for the summer (I'm thinking primarily of
student subscribers whose e-mail accounts won't be used for a couple
months) or if you are leaving for the DSS conference in Jerusalem, don't
forget to unsubscribe. Send to majordomo@panda.mscc.huji.ac.il and, in
the mssg text, write "unsubscribe Orion <address>".

3. I've been keeping an eye on the message length and I thank you all for
your cooperation in trying to adhere to the new guideline of a 2K
maximum. When a message exceeds that length, I do send out gentle private
reminders except in the case of (a) the message was so substantive that
it would have been difficult to edit further (e.g. Bob Kraft's post on
Pliny) or (b) the posting is only a few bytes over the limit or (c) if it
comes from one of our less frequent contributors. I strongly recommend
that you edit any quoted material ruthlessly, quoting only what is
absolutely necessary, and keep an eye on the length of your "signature"
file.
