Magnetic North through Qumran runs through Mount Gerizim. Was there not
some idea in those days that Jewish burials should face Jerusalem?
In that case, for like reasons, these burials were Samaritans?
Now, as an aside, lodestones were scarce in those days. Yet South is
easily fixed if there's sunlight. True North points at Jericho, not at
Mount Gerizim.
Jerusalem is WNW or WbyN more exactly.
Shaft graves have no discernible orientation IMO.
