Certainly an interesting thought that new members had to copy texts.
But implicit are assumptions about general literacy, more specifically
about the ability to write. Can we assume that applicants for
membership typically could write? Studies such as those by William
Harris (Ancient Literacy) strongly emphasize the oral nature of
Mediterranean culture in the period in question.
