Re: Dead Sea level
The discussion of the level of the Dead Sea must, if a level can be
ascertained for the first century bce, have an important side effect in that
it could easily mean that any coastal road (if in fact there were) had to be
nearer to khirbet qumran. The question is how close, for it would be
evidence against a monastery-like purpose for the site. How hidden could it
have been if there was a road that carried the through traffic not far away?
Anyone who made the journey would be able to see it, if the water level were
sufficiently higher, as seems to be indicated.
