I don't have Schiffman on hand to check, but my recollection of the BASOR
article (or was it IEJ?) and the one in the NY Academy of Sciences volume
suggests that nearly all the C-14 datings of the mss fell into the range of
the paleography datings. That is, for each scroll tested, at some point
the range from the C-14 overlapped the range of the paleography.
I had a student write a paper on this last semester and the overlap for the
non-biblical mss fell into two places: the end of C2 bce and the end of C1
bce (his results were more accurate than that, I just don't recall them
exactly). The significance of these dates is that they are at the start of
De Vaux's phase Ib occupation phase and at the end of that phase taking
into account the extension to that phase demonstrated by Jodi Magness.
Many of the biblical mss are from the mid-C2 bce, which is before any major
occupation phase of the Qumran site.
