Who Wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls and Why?

     Lawrence H. Schiffman

Hailed as the leading archaeological find of the century,
the Dead Sea Scrolls have been surrounded with controversy since
their discovery in 1947. As a result, all kinds of sensational-
ist views have been put forth, often by authors who have never
studied these difficult texts. This slide lecture is an oppor-
tunity to learn about the scrolls from a leading Judaic scholar
who works first hand with these ancient documents. The lecture
will provide a thorough introduction to the archaeological back-
ground of the scrolls, and discussion of such questions as:
identity of the sect which gathered the documents, significance
for Jewish history, messianism and law, and relationship to later
Christianity. We will see how the modern controversy about the
publication and release of the scrolls has helped to shape the
controversy about how the scrolls are to be understood.
